The Park Street Corridor (Interactive Map)

Colter Sikora South Park Street

A foray into the world of interactive mapping, this piece, completed in UW-Madison’s Interactive Cartography course, was assembled through ArcGIS, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Flash. My main role in the development of this map was in making the base map for the interactive map viewer (on the left) and the overview map (on the right). Inspired by earlier attempts at subtle background imagery, I developed a pair of maps that gave an effective geographic overview of the neighborhood while not taking away from the interactive dots that highlight the map (not on display in this image. This time in color, I used saturation to differentiate primary features from peripheral ones. Examples of this include the dark gold buildings which display interactive dots (when the interactive layers are turned on) that allow for user investigation. You may try the map on your own by following this link.

For the coding prowess in this map, credit must be given to my partners and programming gurus, Andrew McGuire (Graduate of UW-Madison’s GIS Certificate Program) and Kolin Erickson (UW Undergrad at the time, now a UW Graduate Student). Of course, given that this was a group project, Andy and Kolin also collaborated with comments and quick fixes on the base map as it evolved over the Spring 2010 semester. Thank you guys!

This interactive map was made with the South (Madison, WI) Metropolitan Planning Council and Park Street Partners as a way to promote the businesses and features of interest in the southern part of Madison. Currently, the Planning Council and Park Street Partners are using this map to explore other promotional opportunities for this unique part of the city.
