Artificial Reefs, featured in National Geographic, February 2011

Colter Sikora Artificial ReefsThis project allowed me to refine my skills in geographic data management while mapping out the extent of artificial reefs, which serve to provide fish habitat along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. While working with Martin Gamache and Cartography Editor Lisa Ritter, I was responsible for looking through several sources of artificial reef data to remove duplicate and other unnecessary features. Beginning with around 8,000 points of data, I used a suite of GIS analysis tools and a comparison of attribute table data to provide around 2,000 points of accurate reef data for this final map.
